Organic Modern Design is a full-scope interior transformation of a Wayzata residence that arrived to Lake Street Design Co. with excellent architecture but interiors that had never found their footing. The clients, a couple with a passion for natural materials and a distaste for anything that felt overly composed, wanted a home that felt simultaneously refined and entirely un-precious.
The design response centered on building a palette of materials that age well and improve with use: cerused white oak floors in a wide plank, plaster walls finished with a slight texture that catches light differently at every hour, and furniture sourced from small American and European studios working in natural leathers, linen, and hand-thrown ceramics. Each choice was made with longevity in mind, not trend, not moment, but decade.
The kitchen became the project's anchor. A ten-foot island in honed Pietra Serena sits at the center, surrounded by custom cabinetry finished in a warm off-white that shifts toward cream in morning light. Open shelving in oiled walnut carries a curated display of the family's ceramics collection, turning everyday objects into considered design elements. The result is a kitchen that feels lived-in and intentional in equal measure.
Throughout, Lake Street Design Co. maintained a consistent discipline: every room should feel complete when empty and better when inhabited. Lighting was designed as a system, a layered mix of recessed, pendant, and sconce sources that can be tuned from bright and functional to soft and atmospheric with a single gesture. The Organic Modern Design project stands as one of our most thorough explorations of what "natural" truly means in a luxury context.
