Deephaven
Lines

Project Overview

Deephaven Lines is a project defined by what was left out. When Lake Street Design Co. was first brought into this Deephaven residence, the home was technically complete but spiritually restless, a house that had accumulated materials and gestures without a unifying logic. Our task was not addition but subtraction: to find the essential form buried within the complexity and return the home to it.

The architectural intervention was surgical. Wall surfaces were stripped back to plaster and left there. A dropped ceiling in the main living area was removed, restoring a volume that the previous renovation had compromised. Window trim was simplified to a single-piece profile that disappears against the wall, letting the glass read as a pure opening rather than a framed picture. Every decision was made in service of the same goal: the house should feel as though it has always been this quiet.

Interior material selection followed the same discipline. White oak in a wide, natural-finish plank grounds every room. Plaster walls, applied in two coats and left without sheen, absorb light rather than reflecting it. Hardware throughout is unlacquered brass, chosen to age in place and accumulate the patina of daily use. Furniture was selected from a palette of linen, natural leather, and brushed metals that keep the color story deliberately narrow.

The result is a home that rewards sustained attention. What reads initially as simplicity reveals itself, over time, as precision: the carefully calibrated reveal between cabinet face and wall, the way the stone hearth transitions to the oak floor with a single brass threshold, the light at four in the afternoon in the primary bedroom. Deephaven Lines is among Lake Street Design Co.'s most considered bodies of work, a demonstration that restraint, practiced rigorously, is the most demanding form of design.
